Elizabeth Naigaga was an inspiration to so many nurses in Uganda! She paved the way as a nursing champion to become the head nurse of the first ICU at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. Despite low resources and limited personnel, she improved care in the pediatric intensive care unit and developed a high dependency unit for the neurosurgical patient.

In 2013, Elizabeth traveled to Gifu, Japan and presented at the 11th Quadrennial WFNN Congress. Elizabeth was the first representative from Africa to attend the WFNN meeting. Elizabeth demonstrated incredible clinical, mentoring, and leadership skills which has helped to transform the Mulago ICU into an exemplary unit. She died yesterday in Uganda from cancer but she will be remembered for her dedication and pioneering work to change lives, inspire hope and improve neuroscience nursing.

Elizabeth’s passion to change the world she lived in will be honored by a creating a scholarship fund in her name to benefit an African nurse with limited resources to attend an international nursing conference with WFNN, NCS or AANN. We will miss you Elizabeth!
